Ruck and Roll: Beware of the MAH-BER

The LA Giltinis signed more than they bargained for with Mahe Vailanu, The Mah-ber because he’s taken on the dual role as team barber as well as high-impact hooker.

With the team in a training “bubble” to best deal with the ongoing health crisis, Vailanu and his hair-cutting shears have been in demand.

Lock Nathan Den Hoedt and centre Billy Meakes, the two shaven-headed Aussies, are customers while Corey Thomas and Adam Ashe are also in the queue.

When you have more to lose, you leave the job to the professionals, according to Blake Rogers, the prop from Colusa with the flowing mullet.

“He’s not touching my head,” Rogers said with a laugh.

Rogers explained how much it meant for the new squad just to get into action, at last, for the 42-27 victory over the New England Free Jacks.

“We were all stoked to be involved in the first Major League Rugby game in LA,” replacement prop Rogers said.

“To win, and the feeling in the locker room, just showed us we are starting something that’s worth it at the Giltinis.

“For me and a lot of guys, it was our first game in a long time. There was shaking off of some cobwebs so we know there’s work to do to get where we want to be.”

Den Hoedt agreed: “It was good to finally play and get all those accents and nationalities out on the field

“Not having played in MLR before, I thought it was a really good level with some big contact.
