Ruck & Roll: Opening Day at Coliseum a high for Hanco

Giltinis recruit Hanco Germishuys can’t wait for his first on-field taste of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum after driving 1550 miles for the chance.

Opening Day on Sunday will be a huge thrill for second-season players, fresh signings and fans alike when the 2-0 New England Free Jacks come to town.

Signing for the Giltinis had a full-package appeal when the USA Eagles backrower decided to part ways with Rugby United New York during the off-season

“I’m definitely looking forward to playing at the Coliseum. It will be a new experience playing at a stadium with the history it has,” Germishuys said.

“It’s been an incredible experience in LA already with the atmosphere around training with the boys, seeing improvement every week and then clicking in that second half to win against Toronto.

“There’s a lot of skill and depth in our backrow and that’s a good environment in which to learn which is another reason I came to the Giltinis.”

All recruits are clearly offered flights to LA but Germishuys packed up his Chevy truck in Nebraska and embarked on a three-day, 1550-mile road trip to get here.

Germishuys has been a try-a-game success already through the opening two matches. A boisterous, fun-loving crowd to welcome the Giltinis back to the Coliseum would be the perfect way to energise a big Sunday.

CANADIAN HERITAGE FOR NEW PROP

New Giltinis prop Les Leulua’iali’i-Makin has explained his Canadian heritage.

His late father Joseph was Canadian and worked in foreign affairs in Australia. His mum Lave is Samoan.

He wanted to honour both sides of his family, hence his tongue-twister of a surname.
